The main theme of the Interdisciplinary Research Group (IDG) in Brain Imaging is to use advanced techniques to image brain structure, blood flow and function, particularly in disease states.
To pursue this theme we are developing new imaging techniques, improvements in image processing, and practical ways of applying these techniques to clinical practice to improve understanding both of normal function and disease processes in the brain in humans.
The main techniques used are various forms of MR imaging, but where appropriate other complementary technologies like CT, SPECT and ultrasound are used (to which the members have easy access).
An additional mission of this research is to develop neuroimaging tools that will be useful in the routine clinical practice of the future as well as neuroscience research.
The IDG has members from three faculties, three divisions, seven academic units, four centres and the Wellcome Clinical Research Facility.
Our members include radiologists, medical physicists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, psychiatrists, psychologists, computational neuroscientists, computing experts for image analysis, geriatricians, stroke physicians, basic neuroscientists, neuroendocrinologists, statisticians, and neuropathologists.
Each of our projects contributes to both the technological development or improved understanding and experience with that technology, as well as to the understanding of the disease process under study.
