MD/DDS Higher Professional Degree

This web page will give you information on entry requirements and how to apply for MD and DDS degrees.

Please note: These regulations are for entry between August 2011 and July 2012. The regulations for August 2012 onwards are currently being reviewed and will be updated in due course.

Entry Requirements

Before applying you must first check that you meet the entry requirements for MD/DDS Candidature:

A candidate for the degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD) must:

  1. be a graduate in Medicine and Surgery (MB ChB) of the University of Edinburgh, or a graduate of the Polish School of Medicine in Edinburgh, and must have been engaged since graduation for at least one year either in scientific work bearing directly on the candidate’s profession, or in the practice of Medicine or Surgery, or
  2. hold a qualification which is registrable with the General Medical Council and must have been engaged since graduation for at least one year either in scientific work bearing directly on the candidate’s profession, or in the practice of Medicine or Surgery, and will perform their work in the South East of Scotland, either employed as a member of staff of the University of Edinburgh; or as an NHS employee or as a research worker employed or self-financed or grant-funded, in the University of Edinburgh or an Associated Institution or an NHS establishment.
  3. Have a research proposal that must deal with one or more of the subjects of study in the curriculum for the degrees of MB ChB of the University or with subjects arising directly from contemporary medical practice

A candidate for the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) must:

  1. be a graduate in Dental Surgery (BDS) of the University of Edinburgh and must have been engaged since graduation for at least one year either in scientific work bearing directly on the candidate’s profession, or in the practice of Dentistry, or
  2. hold a qualification which is registrable with the General Dental Council and must have been engaged since graduation for at least one year either in scientific work bearing directly on the candidate’s profession, or in the practice of Dentistry, and will perform their work in the South East of Scotland, either employed as a member of staff of the University of Edinburgh; or as an NHS employee or as a research worker employed or self-financed or grant-funded, in the University of Edinburgh, or an Associated Institution or an NHS establishment.
