LLC research fund guidelines

All applications to the Research Fund should be submitted electronically to Eve Equi. Application forms are available for both conference funding and research activities. Awards will be approved by Committee and applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application within three weeks of the published deadlines.

The School has created a Research Fund, incorporating funds for conference grants, which will be used to support a number of research related activities. The expectation is that colleagues will normally receive a maximum of £750 from School funds for EITHER conferences or research but not normally both.

Applications are invited from salaried (research designated) academic members of staff in the School. They should include a description of the activity for which support is applied, a breakdown of the costs, and an explanation of how the proposal fits into the applicant's and subject group's strategic research plans. Applications should also have the approval of the appropriate subject area Research Advisor and Head of Subject Group. In addition, in the instance where a period of teaching relief has been approved, at the end of such a period it is a requirement that a report should be submitted to the Head of Subject Group.

Notes & Conditions

The maximum for any award will be limited to £750 per year (this can be split between conferences and research).

The LLC Fund may be used for research-related activities including:

Funds will not normally be granted for the purchase of books, films or other source materials which would normally be obtained via the Main Library. If, however, you can present a good case for such materials being vital to your research and for these not being obtainable through the Main Library or any other University channel or fund, your application may be considered on a case-by-case basis and with regard to the following two points: (1) all such materials purchased with the School's funds will revert to property of the School once they have fulfilled their primary purpose as these may have significant interest for further research and teaching activities; (2) in the case of materials being unobtainable through the standard Main Library channels for legal or political reasons, the School cannot use public money on such expenditure.

In all cases, it must be demonstrated that a there will be a clear research output which is consistent with the applicant's personal research activity and also with regard to the School REF strategy.

Research awards are made from a finite fund which can close in the event of over-subscription. Applicants are therefore advised to apply early to avoid any unnecessary disappointment.

Teaching Relief applications will be granted only in exceptional circumstances and applicants will have to make a strong case that their research contributes significantly to the School's strategic research plan. Applications for indexing and/or translation costs will be granted only in exceptional circumstances and must not exceed the £500 limit.

The maximum spend is £750.00 per academic session and colleagues cannot advance funds from the next academic year.

Colleagues are expected to source external funding wherever possible and applications to the LLC Fund may be deemed invalid if funding may have been made available elsewhere.

Any application made in association with an externally funded research project must demonstrate that every effort has been made to accommodate the activity within the terms of the original grant funding.

Please find below a list of external sources for funding the above activities. Please note that this list is by no means exhaustive and the Edinburgh Research & Innovation may be able to help you identify further funding opportunities:
