The purpose of this committee is to promote and coordinate quality assurance and enhancement of teaching and learning within the School.

Annual quality reporting is carried out primarily for the benefit of the School in order to support the continuous enhancement of teaching provision. An annual Quality Assurance and Enhancement (QAE) report is submitted to College and Senate on behalf of the Literatures, Languages and Cultures QAE Committee.

Remit

In line with the University's Teaching Quality Handbook, the School QAE Committee meets annually late in the first teaching Semester (November/December). Its purpose is to monitor and enhance the quality of teaching in the School by:

  • Identifying examples of good practice that may be of use and interest to LLC, HSS and the University as a whole.
  • Examining any examples of poor practice and/or under-achievement, and suggesting means to remedy these.
  • Highlighting issues which are of concern to individual areas, or to the School as a whole, and bring these to the attention of relevant groups or individuals.

The data assessed for each subject area within LLC comprises:

  • Course monitoring forms for the level-eleven MSc/Diploma programmes and for level-eight UG courses.
  • Honours courses (level ten), which are reported on individually by each subject area at their Teaching Review Meetings (TRMs)
  • Honours Cohort statistics
  • External Examiners’ reports and responses
  • Staff-Student Liaison Meeting minutes

At the Committee meeting each subject area is reviewed by the representative of another subject area. These reviews form the basis of LLC's annual QAE report to the College QAE Committee.

Committee members are also important in the further implementation of the College Learning & Teaching Strategy within LLC. The four current priorities in the LTS are:

  • Assessment
  • Research-teaching linkages
  • Academic and pastoral support
  • Reforming the learner journey
