The School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures offers many opportunities for study in research programmes.
We welcome applications from students who would like to enroll for the degrees of MSc by Research, MPhil or PhD in the following subject areas:
Research degrees can cover more than one discipline and arrangements can be made for joint supervision across subject areas, or with input from other Schools within the University. Students who would like to apply should submit a full research proposal, so that we can establish a supervisory team which will meet the needs of the project.
PhD study generally has a minimum period of study of 36 months. Part-time applicants may spread their study over 72 months. Full time students are expected to be in residence in Edinburgh during this period, but part-time students may work from home provided they spend the first 3 months here, and visit Edinburgh for an agreed period every year.
The MPhil degree has a minimum period of 24 months. Assessment is by dissertation only.
This programme provides research training and may include some coursework for students who want to complete a one year masters programme in an area of their own interest
You can apply online for any of our research degrees.
Applicants should include in their applications their degree transcripts, two confidential references, and a full research proposal. This should be a minimum of 2 pages and should include a bibliography. Applicants for English Literature must send a sample of their written work, in addition to the research proposal.
