Links with professional organisations and the translation market
The Translation Studies Graduate Programme has established links with the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI), the foremost professional body in the UK for practising translators and interpreters.
Its regional group ITI Scottish Network organises workshops which are also open to our students.
Some members of the ITI Scottish Network also contribute to our Technology and Translation in the Workplace course as external tutors.
Some of our former graduates who work as freelance translators within Scotland keep in touch with current students, organising meetings and offering informal career guidance at various occasions.
The Translation Studies Graduate Programme regularly receives news about translator internship opportunities, translator trainee programmes and vacancies for translators. These news are circulated on our internal mailing list.
National Museum of Flight Translation Project
Between 2009 and 2011, the Translation Studies Graduate Programme teamed up with the National Museum of Flight in East Fortune, East Lothian, for a series of challenging translation projects.
In the first half of 2010, some of our students and recent graduates translated a guide to the Concorde Experience exhibition and other useful resources into seven languages, thus enabling the non-Anglophone visitors of Scotland’s biggest aviation museum to further enjoy their experience.
In 2010/2011, we repeated this successful collaboration through three different projects that involved most of the language combinations available in the MSc in Translation Studies class.
These voluntary projects have given prospective translators significant practical experience to include in their portfolio, as well as a sense of pride and satisfaction from seeing their work being used in the ‘real’ world. Students have also gained the ability to work to a deadline for a non-academic organisation, experience in writing business emails and an understanding of the importance of prompt communication with project managers - all crucial skills in the translation industry.
