The School provides a number of PhD programmes that last for a minimum period of study of 36 months. Part-time applicants may spread their study over 72 months.
Full-time PhD students are expected to be in residence in Edinburgh during this period, but part-time students may work from home provided they spend the first 3 months here, and visit Edinburgh for an agreed period every year. The MPhil degree has a minimum period of 24 months and assessment is by dissertation only.
PhD/MPhil programmes are available under the five main subject areas, plus a number of cross-disciplinary degrees:
Asian Studies offer PhD/MPhil programmes in Chinese, Japanese, Sanskrit and Translation Studies.
The subject area offers a PhD/MPhil programme in Celtic and Scottish Studies.
European Languages and Cultures offer a selection of PhD/MPhil degree programmes.
The Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies PhD degree is a research programme pursued over three or four years (full-time) or up to six years (part-time).
The Graduate School offers a selection of cross-disciplinary PhD/MPhil degrees.
