Lena WånggrenOutline Biography
Lena is originally from Stockholm, Sweden, where she completed a BA (Hons) in Literary Studies. She holds an MSc and a PhD in English Literature from the University of Edinburgh. She is currently a Research Fellow for SWINC (Scottish Writing in the Nineteenth Century), working with the new edition of Robert Louis Stevenson’s collected literary production (www.englit.ed.ac.uk/SWINC/rls).
Research Interests
Lena's recent research concerns questions of gender in late nineteenth-century literature and culture, specifically the interrelation between gender and technology and the figure of the New Woman. Main authors of interest include Grant Allen and H. G. Wells, examined in the larger context of late-Victorian and fin de siècle commercial and/or feminist fiction.
More broadly, Lena's research interests include literary and critical theory, specifically gender and feminist theory and the works of Michel Foucault. She also works on teaching pedagogy and politics, contemporary feminist practice, and the history of medicine.
Since 2010 she organises a university-wide interdisciplinary feminism and gender reading group (http://interfemedinburgh.wordpress.com).
Research activity
Lena is currently researching gender and medical authority in A. C. Doyle's medical stories, and is also co-editing with Ally Crockford a special issue of Nineteenth-Century Gender Studies entitled 'Writing Bodies: Gender and Medicine in the Nineteenth Century' (forthcoming July 2013). She is a co-editor (with Karin Sellberg and Kam Aghtan) of two forthcoming collections stemming from the 2011 conference Bodies in Movement: Intersecting Discourses of Materiality in the Sciences and the Arts.
She is furthermore co-organising the symposium Critical Pedagogies: Equality and Diversity in a Changing Institution, to be held in Edinburgh in September 2013 (http://criticalpedagogies2013.wordpress.com).
