Geoffrey Carnall has interests in two main areas of research: literature and society in Britain from the mid-eighteenth century to the end of the nineteenth century; and relations between India and Britain from the time of Warren Hastings until the achievement of independence in 1947. He has written a biography of Horace Alexander (1889-1989), a friend of Gandhi who did much to make Indian aspirations better understood in Britain. It is published by the Edinburgh University Press (2010).
