Dilys Rose joined the Literature Department in 2001 as Writer in Residence and has been involved in the MSc in Creative Writing at Edinburgh since its inception. From 1999-2001 she was creative writing consultant at Glasgow University. Prior to that she held two community residencies based in city libraries and has been a regular creative writing tutor on Arvon courses for many years. She is primarily a writer of fiction and poetry though has also written for stage and is currently writing text for musical theatre and opera. She has received various awards for her work, including the Macallan/Scotland on Sunday short story prize (1991), Society of Authors’ Travel award 1997, two SAC book awards (1993 and 1999), the McCash poetry prize (2006), a Unesco City of literature exchange fellowship (2006).
She is particularly interested the short story, in microfiction, in free verse and concrete poetry, as well as creative collaborations involving text, image, sound and movement. She has worked with the painter Moyna Flannigan to produce a series of fictional cameos to accompany new portrait miniatures (Once upon our time, National Galleries of Scotland Publication, 2004), with the composers Steven Deazley and Rory Boyle, writing text for choral works, music theatre and chamber opera. Current collaborations include Helter Skelter (Tramway July 2007) and The Child of Europe (working title), a chamber opera based on the life of Kaspar Hauser.
