Teaching methods

The teaching methods are the same for all of our MSc by Research pathway programmes.

Stonework on McEwan Hall

You will take two taught courses, each of which you will need to write an essay for. There will be a 15,000 word dissertation and a series of research methods seminars to ensure you are equipped with the specific skills needed to finish your dissertation.

Dissertation

All Masters by Research pathway programmes include a 15,000-word dissertation, completed under the supervision of one or more of the course organisers.

Research methods

Students will undertake a seminar-based programme of research methods training in core research skills and subject specific methodologies.

Thus all our MSc by Research pathway programmes offer either an excellent grounding for further research at doctoral level or simply an opportunity to develop further interests in your chosen field.

Taught courses

You will also take two taught courses covering areas of literature and culture related to your chosen field. These will be chosen from a range of options, some exclusive to MSc students, others drawing on the extensive provision of our senior honours curriculum.

You will complete two extended essays (c. 7000 words each) in relation to these courses, to be developed in consultation with the course organiser and your supervisor.
