This programme allows you to undertake a research project of your own devising, leading to a 30,000 word dissertation.

You will be guided in your work by a specialist supervisor, with whom you will have regular meetings. You will also undertake training in important Research Skills and Methods.
The department is able to supervise students wishing to undertake research in each of the main periods of English and Scottish Literature, and in all genres of literary analysis: literary and critical theory, literary history, the history of the book, gender studies, postcolonial literature and American studies.
It also encourages interdisciplinary projects across the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures and also throughout the University and the City of Edinburgh.
