Hispanic Studies at the University of Edinburgh covers Spanish, Portuguese and Catalan.
All these languages may be studied at beginner's level.
Spanish is spoken by more than 400 million people and, as one of the three most widely-spoken languages in the world, it is a very popular option for students. It is the official language of 22 countries and one of the five official languages of the United Nations, as well as an EU language.
Portuguese, which is spoken by over 150 million people in Europe, Brazil and Africa, is also an official EU language and is a subject increasingly in demand.
Catalan is spoken by some 11 million people, mainly in Catalonia, The Balearic Islands, the Community of Valencia, and Andorra. If you are interested in this language, you can take it up in your second year.
Students have the opportunity not only to perfect their language skills, but also to study a wide range of literary and cultural topics, from medieval and classical texts to modern Spanish and Latin-American literature and contemporary film.
Hispanic Studies has eight full-time members of staff, as well as four foreign language assistants and several part-time tutors. With these resources we are able to provide tuition in all major areas of Hispanic literature.
