Translation Studies in German

The MSc in Translation Studies offers postgraduates practical experience in translating texts from a variety of genres into and out of German.

Academic staff are able to supervise a wide range of MSc and PhD dissertation projects, and recent examples include the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales; censorship and translation in the GDR; translation, autobiography and exile; swear words in translation; translating humour; and translation and museum exhibitions.

The German section has a lively postgraduate community and research culture. We have a regular research seminar, with papers on translation and literature. Postgraduates may choose to become involved in the international Holocaust and Translation network, co-directed by Prof. Peter Davies. In recent years, we have welcomed the German writers Christian Bartel, Clemens Meyer, and Christiane Rösinger to Edinburgh, and they have run translation workshops. In 2011, postgraduates from the MSc in Translation Studies worked with Dr Laura Bradley on a two-day event at the Glasgow Film Festival, ‘The Stasi Are Among Us’. Students translated a range of texts, including extracts from GDR filmmakers’ Stasi files, which were displayed in the Centre for Contemporary Art in Glasgow; professional correspondence; and a report for the event sponsor in Germany.
