Outline Biography
Magister
Course organiser: German for Non-Specialists (Levels 1 and 2)
After a one year course at the Sorbonne in Paris I studied French, Comparative Literature, Modern History and Teaching German as a Foreign Language (D.A.F) at the Rheinische-Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn. I won a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Organisation and studied for six month at the Université de Toulouse Le Mirail in the south of France . I graduated with a Magister Artium and a diploma in D.A.F.
The topic of my dissertation was a comparative study of literary translations of utopian fiction. My special interest in literature was fin-de-siècle literature in Europe (Thomas Mann, Huysmanns, Wilde). In linguistics I took a special interest in etymology. This resulted in the publication for the Anuario Galego de Filoloxía, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (Schallwort pirl und die romanische Familie von frz. briller “glänzen“).
Before I decided to move to Scotland I worked for 3 years as an assistant to a German Member of Parliament. I worked as a language tutor in Heriot-Watt for 2 years before my appointment to the present position here at Edinburgh.
Research Interests
I am interested in language acquisition and modern didactics. In co-operation with the Goethe Institut Glasgow , The City of Edinburgh Council and Glasgow Council I have created and adapted learning and teaching resources.
Research activity
I am currently working on post-reunification literature with particular reference to Ingo Schulze (Simples Stories and Handy -Dreizehn Geschichten in Alter Manier).
Knowledge Transfer
Together with the Goethe Institute in Glasgow, the German Consulate and other German organisations in Scotland I coordinate and promote cultural events from the German-speaking countries.
