About DELC

The Division of European Languages and Cultures (DELC) sits within the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures which also includes English Literature, Scottish and Celtic Studies, East Asian Studies, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, and the Graduate School.

The School is part of the College of Humanities and Social Science (HSS). HSS is the University’s largest College - with more than 13,500 students and 1,300 members of staff. They offer 200 undergraduate programmes in a broad range of academic areas, hosted by 11 Schools.

World-class teaching

In the recent QS Subject Rankings, Modern Languages at the University of Edinburgh rated 3rd in the UK and 26th in the world.

DELC offers a very broad range of languages: French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Norwegian, Danish, Swedish and Catalan, with degree-level study available in all but the last.

Degree Programmes

Our MA (Hons) degrees take four years, with the majority offering the option in the first year to study an outside subject. This adds an extra dimension to our studies and provides excellent breadth as well as depth. The choice of outside subject can be taken from either within or outside of our School.

Most of the languages we offer can be started with no prior knowledge. We offer a range of opportunities for studying abroad as an integral part of students’ studies across the School, and it is compulsory for students of DELC to spend the third year abroad.
