Help with computer-related queries

Should you experience problems with your own computer or University computer labs, our support team is on hand to assist you.

As a postgraduate student, you have access to computer labs in the basement of 19 George Square and on the first floor of David Hume Tower.

Printing is available in these labs and is paid for through your printing account, which you can top up at the main desk in the Library. Printing in 19 George Square is 1p cheaper than in the library.

Photocopying is available in 19 George Square and you can purchase photocopying cards from the Graduate School office.

The Common room in 19 George Square has Wifi.

University email account

This is how to auto-forward emails from your student account to your personal email account:

  1. Access sms.ed.ac.uk, and click the ‘filters’ button.
  2. Select ‘insert filter’.
  3. A new rule will appear.
  4. Tick the box next to 'forward to' and enter in the email address that you want to forward your emails to.
  5. Click 'enable filter' and the box should change to green.
  6. If you want to continue to receive the mail in the SMS mail as well you need to tick the box next to 'save in folder' and type Inbox in the box.

We will contact you via your University email account, so it is important to either set up this auto-forward or to regularly check your University email account.

Helpdesks

You can find helpdesks in the Main Library on the 2nd floor in the Learning Resource Centre, which is open weekdays between 10am - 5pm during the semester.

There is also an online helpdesk which can help resolve many computer-related issues.
