Advice on personal and practical problems
It is inevitable that many of us will be faced with difficult situations at some point in our lives and we understand that your studies may be affected by these.
There is a network of support available to students, and you may find it useful to speak to:
Where you feel that your performance in assessment has been affected by your personal issues and that you can provide supporting evidence, you should approach your Director of Studies about applying for Special Circumstances.
The Advice Place has a drop-in centre which can offer advice and information on:
- Health
- Disability issues
- Finance
- Accommodation
- Academic matters
- Legal matters
- Postgraduate study for international and mature students
As with many issues noted here, if you do find yourself in a difficult personal situation, it is important that you inform the University as early as possible so that we can help you access as much help as possible.
Absence through illness
If you are ill and unable to attend classes or to complete your work, it is important that you contact Linda Grieve as soon as possible. It may also be necessary to submit a medical certificate to the office.
Accommodation
Whether you are experienced at living independently or are living in university halls of residence for the first time, the University Accommodation service is on hand to offer advice and residential support.
Financial Questions
If you are unable to pay your fees, you must contact the Finance department at the earliest opportunity in order to find a solution.
The EUSA Advice Place will also be able to offer guidance on applying for Hardship Funds from the University.
The Disability Office
The University welcomes students with disabilities and we strive to maintain equal opportunities for all.
We create reasonable adjustments to any curricular requirements to ensure that you are not disadvantaged.
The Disability Office can offer a wealth of advice and support to students with both existing conditions and those which have developed during the course of their studies.
Childcare
We have two nurseries at the University, making it easier to juggle parenthood and study.
The Day Nursery
Open 50 weeks of the year, the Day Nursery looks after the children of our students or staff when neither parent can stay at home.
It accommodates children from six weeks old and provides meals from the on-site cook.
Uni-Tots
Our second nursery, Uni-Tots, looks after children aged from two and a half to five years.
Funding is available for three and four year olds through our partnerships with local councils.
Council nurseries
You might also wish to investigate other council approved nurseries.
Careers Advice
Our dedicated careers service offers practical and impartial advice to undergraduates on a variety of topics including:
- Career planning
- Job applications
- Interview techniques
The Careers Service is situated in Buccleuch Place.
International students
Each year Edinburgh University plays host to a large number of students from all around the world.
Our International Office can help with any queries you may have about:
- Immigration
- English language requirements
- Living in a foreign city for the first time
The International Office is open between 9am - 5pm, Monday to Friday.
