Biography

After my first degree (Phonetics and Linguistics) at University College London, I took an MSc degree in Applied Linguistics at the University of Edinburgh. During this period, I also worked as an in-house interpreter/translator for the BBC (broadcasting translation) and in the automobile industry (technical translation) as well as providing free volunteer work as a community (legal, medical, art) interpreter/translator.

In 1995, I was appointed as a lecturer in Japanese Studies immediately upon the completion of the MSc degree. Thereafter, I went on to complete my PhD work at the department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics (now known as LEL), The University of Edinburgh, entitled ‘Second Language Acquisition of Japanese Orthography’. I have expanded my work in this research area since then, and I am currently working on a range of topics related to Japanese Orthography in digital contexts.

In 2004, I was appointed to my current position, and I took sabbatical leave in 2006 from The University of Edinburgh, spending a semester at the Graduate School of Japanese Applied Linguistics at Waseda University, Tokyo, as a Japan Foundation Japanese-Language Education fellow. I am currently teaching Japanese language and culture at all undergraduate levels, as well as contributing to the MSc in Translation Studies, and a new MSc in Japanese Studies. From December 2011, I will be directing Britain’s second Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) Centre at The University of Edinburgh.
