Centre for the Study of Islam in the Contemporary World

Haji Noor Deen 2015

One of the world’s greatest living Islamic calligraphy masters will be visiting Edinburgh this August to take part in a series of unique events at three of Edinburgh’s annual August festivals.

Haji Noor Deen

Chinese-Muslim calligrapher Haji Noor Deen fuses Arabic and Chinese styles to produce truly unique works of art which are collected across the globe, including at the National Museum of Scotland.

Noor Deen will be appearing at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, the Edinburgh Just Festival and the Edinburgh Islam Festival where he will be creating live works of calligraphy and discussing the techniques and principles of this celebrated artistic tradition. Noor Deen’s visit has been coordinated by the Alwaleed Centre for the Study of Islam in the contemporary Word at the University of Edinburgh. The centre’s Director, Professor Hugh Goddard, hopes his visit will inspire audiences and provide a memorable introduction to the beauty and diversity of contemporary Islamic art.

Haji Noor Deen is, without doubt, one of the most interesting and dynamic contemporary Muslim artists working today. As a Chinese-Muslim artist, his work represents a fascinating and beautiful meeting point between two of the world’s great artistic cultures.
