Welcome

Welcome from Professor Mary Bownes, Vice Principal Research Training and Community Relations.

Dear Colleague,

I am delighted to have this opportunity to welcome you to the University of Edinburgh.

As a University with international standing for conducting world class research, our research staff are vitally important to us. You will play a pivotal role in our success. Our reputation as a leading research university is in no small part due to the talent, dedication and enthusiasm of our research staff.

One aspect of my work is to be responsible for the ‘researcher development’ agenda within the University. As the University of Edinburgh has, for many years, placed great importance on offering tailored development and support for researchers, you will find that there is a wide range of opportunity available to you. We are committed to making your time here productive, valuable, and enjoyable.

Our research staff are themselves as varied as the University’s range of academic disciplines and research fields. Whether you are joining us in your first academic research position post-PhD, as an independent research fellow, as an experienced academic or industry researcher, or from any other employment background, I genuinely hope you will find your time in Edinburgh’s vibrant academic research community exciting, challenging, and rewarding both personally and professionally.

Thank you for joining our academic community, and I will look forward to hearing about your discoveries and research findings.
