Useful info for new students

EASE and UUN (University Username)

If you are a new student, you should already have your UUN (University Username) and EASE password by the time you arrive at University. Your EASE password is one you chose yourself, not the registration password that was issued to you.

If you don't know your EASE password or you need help with registering, please contact IS for assistance, stating your student username, full name and date of birth.

MyEd

Your UUN and EASE password will allow you to access the MyEd portal, a gateway to a wide range of University systems and information. You only need to remember one web site address for services such as eMail, the WebCT online learning environment, and much more.

University cards

Your University card is used for identification, library services, and access to entry controlled buildings. The PIN associated with your card can be changed using the Card PIN channel on MyEd, which is usually on the myStuff tab.

Cards are issued to new students during Freshers' Week. If you require a replacement card, please contact a Card Help Desk.

Open access computing

Activate your account

New students: You need to activate your account before you can use the open-access computers.

To do this, go to the open-access registration page, log into EASE (if you have not already done so), then enter your EASE password and click 'Activate your account now'.

This can be done from any computer connected to the internet, but kiosk computers for this purpose will be available in most open-access areas.

It is important that you do this, even if you will primarily use your own computer.

See below for guidance on open-access computers (logging in, printing, and saving your files) and view live availability stats for open-access computers.

Print credit and photocopying

Please follow the links below for information on photocopying and printing.

Multimedia resource centres

Additional resources for graphics and multimedia, including graphics and video editing software, cameras, scanners, and poster printing, are available to all students in the IS Resource Centres.

Accessible PCs

Accessible computers are available in certain open access areas. These provide additional hardware and software, designed to assist those with conditions such as mobility impairments, visual impairments, and learning difficulties.

Your own computer

Anti-virus

If you have a Windows PC, you can install Kaspersky Anti-virus for free. Download the installation file from the website. Please note that you should only have one anti-virus program installed on your computer at once, so you must remove any other anti-virus software before installing Kaspersky.

Wireless

Wireless internet is available in many University buildings, including libraries, teaching areas, and unions. You will need to register for wireless before you can connect.

LapLAN

You can also connect your laptop to the internet using an Ethernet network cable in certain areas, including the Main Library.

Access from off campus

Most online University resources can be accessed anywhere in the world by logging into EASE. However, you may find it necessary to set up a VPN Connection, in order to access your central filespace, certain online databases, and restricted websites, when off campus.

Laptop loan service

Students can borrow laptops from the IS Helpdesks in the Main Library, Darwin Library, New College, and EBVC Library. The standard loan period is 3 days during semester.

Laptop clinic

Free sessions for laptops running Windows / Mac OS provide help with diagnosing and fixing a wide range of software faults as well as general system clean-up and maintenance.

Libraries

The Main Library is located on the south side of George Square. There are many other University libraries on various campuses. Locations, opening hours, collections information, and library maps are available online.

EUSA run Fresher's week tours in the library - see their Fresher's week timetable at the link below.

Library catalogue

You can search the library catalogue and renew your library books online.

Borrowing

To borrow a book or other item: self-issue and self-return machines are provided. Alternatively, please take the item to a library Helpdesk. If you need to recall a book or request a book that is not normally available, please contact an IS Helpdesk.

Standard loan items have a loan period of 4 weeks (undergraduates) or 12 weeks (postgraduates and staff). Short loan books can be borrowed for 7 days. Reserve books can be borrowed for 3 hours (or overnight) - no renewals or requests are allowed on reserve books. If you do not return or renew your library books by the time it is due, you will be charged a fine.

High Use Books (HUB) collection

The most highly-used books in the Main Library are in the HUB collection, located on the Ground Floor. All the Main Library’s Reserve loan books and many of its short loan books are there.

Databases and eJournals

Many electronic library resources are available, including full-text journal articles, literature databases, e-books, and image banks.

Library notices

Library notices, such as due book reminders and recall notices, are sent to your University email account only. Please be sure to check it regularly.

Training courses

Training is provided, for students and staff, on a variety of topics, including study skills and IT.
