The Main Library is the largest of Edinburgh University's Libraries.
It holds the primary collections in arts, humanities, social sciences, medicine and informatics.
It also houses the Library's general collections of books and periodicals, older books in all subjects, most of the special collections of rare books and manuscripts, the University archives and the Lothian Health Service archive.
The Library is currently undergoing a major programme of refurbishment to make it fit for the twenty first century.
The Library is situated on the south side of George Square. You can find us on Campus Maps.
Staff and students of the University of Edinburgh have full access and borrowing rights. Staff of Lothian NHS Trusts may register as users according to the current service level agreement with the University of Edinburgh and upon production of current ID documentation.
The Main Library Redevelopment Project has seen the collections relocated around the building, through the schedule of works. You can see the most up-to-date location of the collections using the link below.
A selection of brand new books is displayed on the first floor next to a selection of current journals and newspapers. You can borrow these books in the same way as other books in the Main library.
From 17th October 2011 lockers will be available in the Main Library, a number of which can be rented.
Lockers which can be rented are located on Floor 1 and Floor 5. There are also 'daytime' use lockers on the Ground Floor.
To apply to rent a locker, please ask at the IS Helpdesk in the Main Library.
