How to renew books
A guide to renewing your Library books, including information on how to renew books online.
If another user has placed a hold or recall on your book you cannot renew it. Otherwise:
- Standard Loan books can be renewed up to 5 times before they need to be brought back to the issuing Library.
- Short Loan or HUB Short Loan books can be renewed up to 15 times before they need to be brought back to the issuing Library.
How do I renew my books online?
To renew your books online you must log into your online library record. Your online library record lists the books you have borrowed with their due dates and you can also use it to access your personal Bookbag.

Are there other ways to renew my books?
In-person:
- If you do not have the books with you, you can renew books at any Library Helpdesk. You must have your University of Edinburgh card or library borrowers card with you to do this.
By phone:
- You can renew book over the phone by contacting the issuing Library, you must have your University of Edinburgh or library borrowers card barcode number to hand.
If there are any blocks on your library record these will need to be cleared before staff can renew books for you in-person or by phone.
