a-n. The Artists' Information Company

Description: a-n's purpose is to stimulate and support contemporary visual arts practice and to affirm the value of artists in society through advocacy and information, from the perspective of practicing artists. The a-n website offers straightforward routes to information of relevance to all engaged in the visual arts. A-n aims to represent the many voices, industry insights and wide range of activities within contemporary visual arts today. Resources include a Knowledge Bank, a Publications section and a Jobs and Opportunities section. All users can access the a-n archive of jobs and opportunities, for learning purposes. Because the University of Edinburgh Library is a member of JISC, all students can get a free student membership, giving them free access to a-n Current Jobs and Opportunities listings. Just enter the promotion code listed on the password page when you sign up at https://www.a-n.co.uk/register-student. Student membership allows full access to current jobs and opportunities, and enables members to post news on the a-n site, keep a blog, and so on.

American Film Institute Catalogue

Description.This resource covers the history of American cinema from 1893 to 1975, with full or short records for films from 1976-2011.

Amica Library

Description.This archival collection of digitized searchable backfiles from first issue to the year 2005, of many of the foremost art and architecture magazines of the 20th-century, supports scholarship across the spectrum of disciplines in the arts, from fine and applied arts through to interior design, industrial design, and landscape gardening. The title list includes: Apollo, Architectural Review, Architects Journal, Art Monthly, British Journal of Photography, Country Life, Eye, Graphis, Ornament and more.

ARTstor

Description:ARTstor is a digital library of images covering the arts, architecture, humanities, and social sciences. The collections comprise contributions from outstanding museums, photographers, libraries, scholars, photo archives, and artists and artists' estates. If you wish to download images for your own scholarly use you will need to Register with ARTstor, once you have logged in with EASE. By registering your email address and creating a password you will create a profile which will allow you to download images and save images to folders as part of "My ARTstor". Note: To register for an ARTstor account, you must be on-site at your institution, or logged in through your institution's proxy server.

Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals

Description:Indexes more than 1,000 periodicals published worldwide on archeology, city planning, interior design, and historic preservation, as well as architecture. Produced by the Getty Information Institute and Columbia University.

Berg Fashion Library

Access information: Available on and off campus
Description:Berg Fashion Library from Bloomsbury Publishing/OUP: “the authority on world dress”: an extensive online portal which offers fully cross-searchable access to a large and growing range of Berg content collections - including the Berg Encyclopedia of World Dress and Fashion online, e-books, reference works, and images.
Coverage:Content in the collection dates back to before 500 BCE via the taxonomy search and back to 1600 via the timeline search through to the present day and covers all continents of the World.

Description:Over 380,000 images from museums, galleries, private collections and contemporary artists all copyright cleared for educational use. Bridgeman Education gives you access to the visual culture of every civilization and every period from Prehistory to the present day across continents and civilisations.

Description:The Design & Applied Arts Index (DAAI) database indexes over 500 international design and craft journals, covering all aspects of design and applied arts. Subjects covered include architecture, interior design, furniture design, graphic design, typography, illustration, photography, packaging, exhibition design, theatre design, design management, design history, craft history, fashion, textile design, embroidery, quilting, fibre art, surface design, jewellery, metalsmithing, ceramics, glass, and (to a limited extent) fine art.
Coverage:DAAI covers journals published from 1973 to the present, although most articles date from 1987 onwards.

ECA Library Image Collection

Description:The ECA Library Image Collection is a database of over 6,000 high-quality images, selected to support study and teaching at Edinburgh College of Art. The subject areas covered include Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Art and Design, including contemporary practice.

Description:Unique learning resources for the visual arts. With biographies, work examples, bibliographies and glossaries, the eLexicons provide the complete foundation for study in higher education, covering graphic design, typography, illustration, lettering, art and craft. Support material includes lecture guides, indexes and reading lists.

Entertainment Industry Magazine Archive

Description:An archival research resource containing the essential primary sources for studying the history of the film and entertainment industries, from the era of vaudeville and silent movies through to 2000.
The core US and UK trade magazines covering film, music, broadcasting and theatre are all included, together with film fan magazines and music press titles.
Magazines have been scanned cover-to-cover in high-resolution colour, with granular indexing of all articles, covers, ads and reviews.

FIAF Plus - International Index to Film Periodicals

Description.A tool for film studies, created by the International Federation of Film Archives, it indexes more than 500,000 articles from 340 of the world's foremost academic and popular film journals, dating from 1972 onward. FIAF Plus delivers searchable full text from many of the most important FIAF journals, including full runs of key titles such as Sight and Sound.

Film Index International

Description.Produced in collaboration with the British Film Institute, Film Index International contains the BFI's most up to date film and person index, with records from 1900 to the present.

Description:Bibliothèque Nationale de France and partners' full-text collections. Two million items from books, periodicals, maps, scores, images, sound recordings manuscripts.

German Literary Expressionism Online

Access information:Access on campus or off campus via VPN.
Description: The German Literary Expressionism Online database gives access to 149 journals, yearbooks, collections and anthologies from the early 20th century, many in full text. The journals, yearbooks and anthologies of literary expressionism serve not only as sources on German literature of the Modern era, but can also be used for the study of the history of art, theatre, film, dance and music between 1910 and 1930.

International Bibliography of Art (IBA)

Access information:Access on and off campus.
Description:Citations to scholarly literature on Western art. Indexes 500 core journals, with an emphasis on specialist and rare titles not covered by other indexes, plus detailed coverage of monographs, essay collections, conference proceedings and exhibition catalogues. Approximately 60% of the content is aimed to be in languages other than English (primarily German, French, Italian and Spanish). The successor to the Bibliography of the History of Art (BHA).
Coverage:1945 onwards.

International Index to Performing Arts Full Text

Description:Indexes and abstracts of the contents of more than 260 international periodicals on the entertainment industry. Full text for more than 100 of them. Approx. 500,000 records on subjects including dance, drama, theatre, film and television.
Coverage:early 1900s onwards. Abstracts from 1998.

JSTOR

Access information:Access on and off-campus.
Description:Full-text journal archive service providing access to complete back runs of all the scholarly journals currently available in JSTOR. Recent volumes are excluded, usually the last 3-5 years, but each year a further year is added to the archive.
Each title is listed in the Library catalogue.
The collections currently available are: Arts & Sciences 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 12; Biological Sciences; Health & General Sciences; Ireland. The 19th Century British Pamphlets Collections is also available via JSTOR.

Oxford Art Online

Description:Includes Grove Art Online. Contains 45,000 articles on every aspect of the visual arts - painting, sculpture, graphic arts, architecture, decorative arts and photography. Compiled over a period of 15 years, it represents the work of more than 6,800 scholars from around the world, each writing on his or her own specialist field of study.
It also gives access to 100,000 images of painting, sculpture, architecture and the decorative arts from the Bridgeman Art Library.

Project MUSE

Description:Provides access to almost 600 full text journals from 30 scholarly publishers, covering the fields of literature and criticism, history, the visual and performing arts, cultural studies, education, political science, gender studies, economics, and many others.
Note:There is no subscription to the e-books, the only e-books available are the open access titles.

SCRAN

Description:1.5 million text records of historic monuments and of artefacts held in museums, galleries and archives, plus 100,000 related multimedia resources; video or sound clips, animations, graphics, plans, virtual reality objects and in particular, colour photographic images.
Access to the text records and thumbnail images is freely available. Access to full resources is available under licence only, the terms of which restrict use of the material for no profit, no proliferation use in education.

Theatre in Video

Description:Theatre in Video contains more than 250 definitive performances of the world's leading plays, together with more than 100 film documentaries, online in streaming video - more than 500 hours in all, representing hundreds of leading playwrights, actors and directors. This video resource is searchable by title, actor, playwright, and subject. It is also browsable by actor, director, playwright, genre, and dates. It is possible to bookmark specific scenes, monologues, and staging examples and then include those online links in learning and teaching material and in Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
