Introduction
Podcasting is the process of producing digital audio or video media files, and distributing them over the internet.
Podcasting has many potential applications for media enhanced eLearning, both tutor and student centred. It is possible to capture images and sound of acceptable quality, using simple mobile devices, such as Smartphones and Flip cameras. More professional results can be achieved with specialist equipment, and production support from IS.
Once ready for distribution, podcasts can be made available from a virtual learning environment, such as WebCT, or the website of a hosting service. A user can often choose to be alerted to the availablility of a new podcast by means of an RSS feed. Once published, audiences can download or stream media files to a computer or mobile device, such as an iPod or Smartphone.
