Working from home

Below is a list of useful hints and tips to help you connect up your personal computer or laptop so that it can access all University IT services.

There are various methods of achieving access to secure University facilities but please note that some are not supported by every school/unit. If you wish to use a different method or package from those described below then you should contact your IT support:

2. If you need access to secure University services only accessible on the University network you will need to register for the University Virtual Private Network (commonly abbreviated to VPN). You will also need to download an extra piece of software to allow you to connect to the VPN:

Accessing services

None of the following services, with the exception of Network shares, require use of the University VPN to work from home:

Wake on LAN and Remote Connect

If your office computer is correctly configured, it is possible to wake it up remotely from a sleep or hibernate state. This should allow you to do all the computing tasks you would do in the office from wherever you can get online.
