Windows 7 and XP
Follow the instructions below to install the Information Services client and configure the built-in L2TP/IPSec VPN client for your Windows computer. This installer works with Windows 7 (both 32 and 64 bit versions) and Windows XP (32 bit only).
Manual configuration of Windows 7
If you wish to manually configure the built-in Windows 7 L2TP/IPSec VPN, please follow the instructions provided.
Windows Vista users should note that while these instructions may work for your system, the client has not been tested with any version of Windows Vista and is provided as is.
Install VPN client software
Download the built-in L2TP/IPSec VPN client software for Windows. You may be asked to log into EASE before you can download the software.
Left mouse click on the "Download Windows L2TP/IPSec VPN client" link above and choose "open" or "run". At this point you may be presented with a user account control window at which point you will need to select "yes".
Windows will start an installer, detect your version of windows and install the client.
You should see the following popup window (XP version is similar).
- Ensure the "My use only" checkbox is checked.
- XP users should ensure “Add a shortcut on the desktop” is checked.
Using the VPN client software
If the install succeeds you will be presented with the following window.
If you have not registered for the University Wireless and VPN services please use the link below before continuing.
- Enter your username (UUN) and the password which you specified when you registered for the VPN service.
- We recommend you do not save the password.
- We recommend you do not connect automatically.
- Click “Connect”
Disconnect from the VPN service
To disconnect from the VPN service:
Using Windows 7
- Select the network connections notification in the system tray at the bottom right of standard Windows 7 desktop.
- Right click on “VPN Connection to The University of Edinburgh”.
- Select “Disconnect”.
Using Windows XP
- Click on "Start" and then right click on "My Network Places".
- Select "Properties".
- Right click on "VPN Connection to The University of Edinburgh (XP)".
- Select "Disconnect".
Reconnect to the VPN service
To reconnect to the VPN service:
Using Windows 7
- Open the network connections notification, right mouse click on "VPN connection to The University of Edinburgh" and select "Connect".
- Enter your username (UUN) and the password which you specified when you registered for the VPN service.
- Select "Connect".
Using Windows XP
- Click on "Start" and then right click on "My Network Places".
- Select "Properties".
- Right click on "VPN Connection to The University of Edinburgh (XP)".
- Select "Connect".
