Backup service overview
Information Services provides file backup services to ensure security of the data on our systems.
Files are normally backed up nightly to secure tape or disk storage. All IS provided services use these backup services and backups can also be provided for school's servers.
The backup service choice
We provide four backup services depending on the nature of the systems to be backed up. They are as follows:
SAN backup for non-research data
Systems connected to the infrastructure Storage Area Network or large file servers may be backed up to tape.
SAN backup for research data
Research groups using the Edinburgh Compute and Data Facility may request backups using the research SAN backup service.
Small Unix workgroup server backups
Small Unix workgroups servers (less than 300GB of data) may be backed up using this service.
