Policy on purchasing books in cloth or paperback
In order to ensure that Library stock purchased is best suited for its intended purpose and to reduce the amount of choice required at the ordering stage, the following formula has been adopted as a guide to when items should be purchased in cloth and when in paperback.
Where an option exists (for example when cloth is not specifically requested by the recommender), cloth bound copies of titles should be purchased in preference to paperback, except when:
- The price of the cloth edition exceeds that of the paperback by at least £25 or the equivalent (an exception would be where the publisher is known to produce sub-standard paperbacks, and a cloth copy would always be preferred).
- Duplicate copies are being purchased.
- Special circumstances obtain (e.g. funds do not allow sufficient latitude to purchase required variety of titles).
