Information Services are closing down a legacy server (vpngate.net.ed.ac.uk) that allowed VPN connections on 1st August 2012.
Most users will already be connected to our new, more secure server, but anyone who finds that their VPN stops working should reconfigure their VPN as per the instructions on the VPN service webpages:

It is proposed to shutdown the legacy vpngate.net.ed.ac.uk service on 1st August 2012. The vpn2.net.ed.ac.uk service should be used instead of vpngate.net.ed.ac.uk.
Anyone continuing to use the legacy vpngate.net.ed.ac.uk service.
These users should reconfigure their computer to use vpn2.net.ed.ac.uk as per the instructions on the VPN service webpages:
It is no longer possible to obtain maintenance for the equipment used to provide the vpngate.net.ed.ac.uk service. In addition, the PPTP protocol used by most of the users of vpngate.net.ed.ac.uk is considered very insecure.
