Student Exchange Programmes at the School of Informatics

The School of Informatics encourages students to consider the possibility of spending one year of their undergraduate degree course (typically the third) at a university in another country.

Many exchanges are also open to MSc and PhD students students. In this case the student would work with a supervisor at the host institution abroad and on research for their MSc or PhD thesis.

Assessment

Students spending a year abroad are expected to take courses that correspond reasonably closely to the courses they would have taken in Edinburgh, both in terms of content and credit weighting (e.g. 60 European Credit Transfer Scheme points correspond to 120 Edinburgh University points).

Because of the difficulty of mapping an overseas mark to an Edinburgh mark, the Senatus has ruled that students will be allocated the appropriate credits for the period spent abroad but that these will be zero-weighted in terms of the final degree classification (unless the period abroad is a requirement of the course).

So for students in Informatics who spend their third year abroad, their degree results will be based on their final year marks only. However, in the case of a borderline mark, the Board of Examiners could use the third year transcript to inform its decision.

Our Exchange Programmes

Erasmus Link with the University of Antwerp, Belgium

This link enables one student from Edinburgh per year to spend up to nine months in Antwerp. The exchange is open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Erasmus Link with the Technical University of Catalunya (UPC), Barcelona, Spain

This link enables two students from Edinburgh per year to spend up to nine months in Barcelona. The exchange is open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Our link is with the Barcelona School of Informatics at UPC. According to their web site, 60% of teaching at UPC is in Catalan and 40% in Spanish. However, the Barcelona School of Informatics also offers some of its courses in English (especially advanced courses).

Erasmus Link with Saarland University, Saarbr├╝cken, Germany

This link enables two students from Edinburgh per year to spend up to nine months in Saarbrücken. The exchange is open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Edinburgh students can take courses both at the Department of Computational Linguistics and at the Department of Computer Science at Saarland University. Both departments teach some of their courses in English (especially advanced courses).

Erasmus Link with Trento University, Italy

This link enables one student from Edinburgh per year to spend up to nine months in Trento. The exchange is open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Other International Exchanges

The University also has exchanges with universities outside Europe (including North America and Asia). The International Office provides more information, including a List of all International Exchanges. Please note that these links are not specific to Informatics. They are open to students from all disciplines and are managed centrally by the University.
