The facilities

Inspace is a laboratory that explores the cultural significance of informatics and new media practice. Situated on the ground floor of the Informatics Forum, the lab comprises a 300 square metre space which can transform into a gallery, studio, cinema, workshop or lecture space. Inspace is home to a joint research partnership between the School of Informatics and New Media Scotland. It's also the base for activities in the new Centre for Design Informatics.

What we do

With each passing quarter, different programme catalysts will be released enabling research, production, education and outreach activity. Inspace seasonal thematics are chosen from an anonymous open call, with a second open call for collaborators made once each thematic has been chosen. Hands on dialogue and exchange will unfold through experiments, talks and performances culminating in #labtime, where we deploy the findings of our work.

Informatics and new media practice are ever evolving, changing every day. Our core programme has been developed in collaboration with the Dialogues Festival and Edinburgh Neuroscience. We are an official venue for the Edinburgh International Science Festival, Edinburgh International Film Festival and Edinburgh Art Festival. Come along to one of our regular Encounters talks or Atmosphere expanded cinema screenings.

Inspace was created as an agile resource for the research, exploration and presentation of digital culture. We welcome and invite collaborative projects that occupy a tighter timeframe than our core programmes. We're interested in taking technology, audiences and our expertise in new and dynamic directions. This is what we call our 48 hours programme. Talk to us. Let's see what we can do together.

Our aims

Through Inspace we aim to increase public awareness and understanding of the role of computation in modern biology, security, learning and other areas of life. Inspace provides a focus for visitors, researchers and the general public to learn more about our research and the many practical uses of this research in particular smart spaces, responsive environments and interactions between Informatics and other disciplines from the arts to the life sciences.
