Requesting a course change

Students are able to change their initial selections of courses. Final decisions on classes have to be confirmed by the end of week 2 of teaching.

When you can change your course selections

We want you to be satisfied with your courses. Many students make changes to their course selections before arriving in Edinburgh. We will try to accommodate any requested reasonable changes. However, if you are asking to change your courses every week, then we may suggest you wait until you arrive in Edinburgh. At that stage, you can discuss your options with your Personal Tutor.

The summer is our busiest time for receiving applications and for acquiring CAS codes for those students who need a visa. We prioritise application processing, offer making and visa-related processes over course changes. Hence, you may not receive an immediate reply to a request for course changes.

Remember that your course selection is not set in stone. You will have ample opportunity to review them with your Personal Tutor in Freshers’ Week (or week 1 of semester 2). You will also be able to attend a couple of classes before you make any final decisions about suitability.

All course choices must be finalised by the end of week 2 of teaching.

Problems in changing courses back

Before requesting changes, you should also consider how likely it is that you might change your mind again. There is no guarantee that we will be able to offer your original choices again after you make changes. This is particularly relevant if you are allocated high pressure honours (3rd year) courses in any of the following popular areas:

Course changes and your home university

It is essential that you double check the implications of any course changes you are considering with your home university. You need to ensure that you will still receive transfer credit and meet your graduation requirements before you request a change. However, please also remember that requesting a change doesn’t mean that change is confirmed. It would be wise to wait until after you have received confirmation of your new schedule from us before making any formal changes with your home university.
