GCE A Levels

Information for applicants applying with GCE qualifications.

Minimum requirement: is BBB at one sitting. Degree programmes which require an ‘A' pass in a principal subject (e.g. Maths, Music) require ABC in one sitting.

General Studies (AS and A2) A Level is not accepted for entry to the College of Humanities and Social Science.

As with other qualifications, you must have an English qualification at the appropriate level.

Most subject areas will look for breadth of study across subjects.

Please feel free to seek advice before committing to a particular course of study at your school or college, to ensure that it would meet the requirements of your intended programme of study at the University.

Individual degree requirements

Entry requirements for each degree programme can be found via the degree finder.

For many degree programmes we will expect you to have studied specific subjects at A Level, AS Level or GCSE.

Extended Project and Advanced Extension Awards

We welcome the use of the Extended Project (EP) and, in Mathematics, the continuation of Advanced Extension Awards (AEA) as a means of stretching the most able students and encouraging an interdisciplinary approach.

However, we recognise that not all students have equal opportunity to access AEAs and so these do not normally provide any additional credit in the assessment of academic qualifications for entry purposes.

The EP will normally only be considered where offered as part of the Advanced Diploma.

Unit Grade information

The University of Edinburgh does not intend to use A Level unit grade information either in selection or in offer making.

It may however choose to do so in the assessment of borderline applications in certain high demand subject areas and where applicants have narrowly missed the conditions of an offer.

A* grade at A Level

The University welcomes efforts to assist in differentiating between very well qualified students. As with all new qualification developments, the University will proceed with caution, and will not use the new grade in the selection process. However, the new A* will be used in offer-making in some of our most competitive subject areas.
