Erasmus exchange allows Edinburgh students to study or undertake work placements in Europe. International exchange allows students of certain subjects to study at partner institutions in North or South America, Australasia, or Asia.
A minimum of three months' continuous work or study abroad must be completed in any Erasmus exchange. Such Erasmus exchanges are an integral part of the degree programme and credits gained on the programme count towards the student's degree back at Edinburgh.
During their time at Edinburgh, a student may receive an Erasmus grant for one study period and one work placement period of up to 12 months each.
An Erasmus grant is available to participating students to assist with the extra costs associated with studying and living abroad. This grant is intended as a contribution but will not cover all the costs of your time abroad. The grant is not means-tested.

The International Exchange Programme allows students to spend their third year at partner institutions in North or South America, Australasia, or Asia.
The programme is open to most but not all students in the College. Students wishing to go on the International Exchange programme should talk to their Director of Studies first. For further information, see the International Exchange programme guide:
For students successfully completing their approved studies at the exchange institution then the work undertaken will be credited towards their Edinburgh degree. However, the grades achieved will not be converted into Edinburgh equivalents. Thus, students will proceed on to their fourth year of study but their degree will normally be classified only on the basis of the work they complete locally in that fourth year at Edinburgh.
Tuition fees are normally not paid to the host institution. However, since the exchange student is still a matriculated student of Edinburgh University, tuition fees must still be paid to Edinburgh University. A reduction in these fees may be possible (the Registry Office can advise). All other costs - travel, accommodation, personal expenses, insurance - must be met by the student.
