Couples counselling
In addition to the free individual counselling service we offer a couples counselling service that is available for all Edinburgh University staff and their partners at a modest cost.
Problems in our intimate relationships cause considerable unhappiness and distress which can spill over into all areas of life, affecting our health, our relationships and our work.
Some common issues which affect couple relationships are:
- communication difficulties
- different views about having children
- having different sexual requirements
- problems with money
- someone having an affair
- arguments which never seem to be resolved
- one partner wants a separation/divorce
- children leaving home
- difficulties with anger or violence
- physical or mental health difficulties
Often couples find that they have become stuck trying to solve their problems, with communication breaking down and one or both of the partners feeling despairing about ever reaching a resolution. Couple counselling enables couples to explore their difficulties in the presence of a trained professional, who can help the couple talk about what has gone wrong and try to find a way forward again.
Cost
There will be a charge of £35 per session for this service, which is considerably lower than the average cost of couple counselling in the private sector. This service is offered in addition to the existing free counselling service for individual staff members
Counsellors
The counselling will be carried out by fully trained and experienced counsellors who have had an additional training in working with couples.
Eligibility
All University of Edinburgh Staff and partners are eligible to apply for couple counselling. Attendance at couple counselling will not preclude the staff member from seeking individual counselling at some other time.
However, it should be noted, that the individual counselling service is not available to partners, unless they are also a staff member.
Attendance
In the majority of cases couple counselling is most effective when both partners attend the sessions together. You should therefore attend as a couple unless your counsellor recommends individual sessions.
