Safe in the Capital?

Barnton Quarry housed a World War II RAF command bunker, which was subsequently converted into a nuclear Cold War bunker. ‘Barnton Quarry Restoration Project ’ is currently developing and refurbishing the site as an educational facility.

Edinburgh’s Cold War Bunker in Barnton Quarry

Cold war bunker

The site is currently not yet open to the public, but we will have the unique opportunity to receive a guided tour and to talk about the future of the site. Students will have the opportunity to provide input into how best to develop the site into an educational exhibition facility. ‘Barnton Quarry Restoration Project ’ is also constantly looking for volunteers so that there may be the possibility for students to register their interest in participating on a more long-term basis.

When you are booking, please let us know if you have a bus ticket for Lothian Buses that you could use to get to the bunker. If you don't have one, we will supply a bus ticket.

Warning: the bunker is an uneven and dusty building site! This means:

  • You will need to wear sturdy shoes (preferably boots) and sensible clothing - nothing too loose. If you don't, you will not be allowed admission;
  • You'll be supplied with a breathing mask, hard hat and high vis jacket that you will need to wear at all times when on the site;
  • It is imperative that you adhere to the safety briefing and any instructions given on the site.
