Facilities
The University of Edinburgh possesses excellent facilities for the study of the Ancient World. The University Library contains a substantial collection of primary and secondary materials relating to Classics as well as offering access to important databases, such as the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae and Brill Online. In addition to the University Library the School possesses a dedicated Classics Library.
These resources are supplemented by others, including the National Museum with its library and the National Library of Scotland, which as a copyright library is entitled to every book published in the United Kingdom.
Community
There is always something going on in Classics at Edinburgh, whether it is the weekly Classics research seminar, informal reading groups, international conferences or trips abroad. All this makes for a lively and friendly community in which to study and talk.
In addition to the regular staff every two years sees the arrival of a Leventis Visiting Professor, one of whose duties is to host a major conference. In 2009 it was John Marincola; in Autumn 2011 it will be Ruth Scodel from the University of Michigan.
