I was a postgraduate student at Nuffield College, Oxford, from 1965 to 1967, when I joined the History Department at Edinburgh. After twenty-three years as a Lecturer and subsequently as a Reader I opted in 1990 for part-time employment as an Endowment Fellow. From 1996 to 2005 I held the post of Director of the Centre for Second World War Studies. I was a Visiting Fellow of All Souls in the academic year 1990-1.
