Biography

I gained both my degrees from the University of Edinburgh in the 1980s, and was a postdoctoral fellow in the University in the early 1990s. I then went on to hold lectureships in the University of Wales, Lampeter, and in the University of Sheffield, and a Visiting Fellowship in the University of London. In 1998 I was appointed Lecturer in Scottish History in the University of Edinburgh. I was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2004 and to Reader in 2006.

I was Publication Secretary of the Scottish History Society from 1989 to 2002. I was Director of the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft which went online in 2003.

External appointments

Since 1998 I have been an Associate Editor of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (published in 2004), responsible for entries on sixteenth-century Scotland.
