Biography
I was born and raised in Massachusetts. My adolescence coincided with the bicentennial of the American Revolution—unsurprisingly a much bigger event in New England than in Britain. Repeated school trips to Plimoth Plantation, Lexington and Concord, the site of the Boston Tea Party and other stops along Boston’s “Freedom Trail” fostered in me an interest in early American history. I pursued this interest as an undergraduate at Tufts University and a postgraduate at Boston University. In 1992 I came to Britain to take up a temporary lectureship. Originally I intended to stay for a year. Happily, here I remain, having come to Edinburgh in 1997.
