I was lucky enough to do my undergraduate study at Keele University (1991-4) – it was the only university that gave me an entrance offer – and the experience turned out to be wonderful, not least because it introduced me to Colin Richmond, a medievalist who also taught on the Vietnam war and the Holocaust. Colin suggested I apply to work for my PhD under Tony Kushner at Southampton University (1994-8), which was another fortunate move. Upon leaving Southampton, I became research director at the Holocaust Educational Trust for the best part of two years, and then got a Leverhulme Special Research Fellowship (as I think the Early Career Fellowships were then called) for another two years (2000-2002). Then I got a lectureship at Edinburgh, was promoted to reader in 2006, a professorship of modern history in 2007, and the established (Pares) chair of European history at the beginning of 2011.
