I studied Modern History at Corpus Christi College and Nuffield College, Oxford, where I completed a D.Phil. in 1986. I was a British Academy Post-Doctoral Fellow between 1986 and 1988, and was Lecturer in Modern History at University College Dublin between 1988 and 1991, when I moved to Queen’s University Belfast. I was promoted to a Readership at Queen’s in 1995, and to a chair in Modern Irish History in 1999. I spent 1996-7 as John Burns Visiting Professor at Boston College, Massachusetts, and 2000-2002 as a British Academy Research Reader in the Humanities. I have been external examiner at several universities in Britain and Ireland, and have served on the International Assessment Panels of the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences. I hold a British Academy Senior Research Fellowship (2008-9), and in January 2010 took over as Head of the School of History, Classics and Archaeology.
I am a member of the Peer Review College of the AHRC.
