The ethical aspects of research are important for several reasons. It is important in terms of governance and risk management.
Having your proposal read and cleared by a designated Committee will give you the confidence to present yourself and your research to potential participants and ask for access and co-operation.
The fact that you follow research procedures which have been approved in this way also gives you protection if you should encounter difficulties during your research.
However, equally important is the impact ethical aspects will have on the research itself. The integrity and respect with which you deal with your research participants will impact on access and quality of data.
The School has put in place an ethics research policy and procedures, which aim to help staff and student researchers, think through the ethical aspects of their research in a thorough and constructive way and therefore enhance its quality.
Our policy follows a College of Humanities and Social Science model, something which adds to the governance protection it affords.
