Outline Biography
I grew up in Edinburgh. After qualifying as a mental health nurse in 2002 I worked in various healthcare settings including as a CPN and as a Primary Care Mental Health Practitioner. I returned to the University of Edinburgh in 2009 and am now in the final year of my PhD.
Project Title
The Supervision Experiences of Mental Health Nurses and Midwives
Project details
This qualitative research project explores the supervision experiences of community based mental health nurses and midwives through the narratives they tell about their experiences. Data for the project were collected through semi-structured interview and have been analysed used a narrative framework.
The aim of the project is to develop an in-depth and contextualised understanding of how supervision works in practice and as part of a complex network of other forms of support for practitioners. The similarities and differences between the supervisory structures found in the professions of mental health nursing and midwifery are used to illuminate norms and expectations about supervision, and to understand the diversity of supervision practices.
