Elsie Stephenson's legacy: nurse leaders in universities today

Thursday, 15 March 2012, 6.15pm: Fiona Ross is Professor of Primary Care and Dean, Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences, Kingston University and St George's University of London. Professor Ross is a graduate of Nursing Studies at the University of Edinburgh.

This lecture celebrates the work of Elsie Stephenson, the first Director of Nursing in the University of Edinburgh established in 1956.

ICCHNR Conference 2013: Transforming Community Health

This conference will highlight developments in nursing practice, research and policy which impact on the work of different nurses working in the community environment and aims to provide evidence to promote strategies for the advancement of nursing for high quality care in the community setting. The conference will provide an environment in which to share good practice, disseminate research and meet others working in similar fields offering opportunities to establish new collaborations and networks.

Winifred Raphael Memorial Lecture

31 October 2011, 5pm: This free public lecture is a key event in the Royal College of Nursing's Research Society calendar, and will explore how nursing research contributes to a particular impact, that of enabling human beings to flourish. Summer school

5-9 September 2011: A Summer School is to be held in Nursing Studies with a focus on developing research proposals and writing for publication. This is a great opportunity for those who want to develop their skills in these areas with a view to publishing, starting research work or who are beginning, or thinking about beginning postgraduate research training.

Multidisciplinary international conference

2-5 June 2011: A major international conference is to be held to mark the bicentenary of the birth of James Young Simpson. It will launch a new scholarly biography, entitled James Young Simpson: Lad o Pairts. This book is edited by Rosemary Mander, Emeritus Professor of Midwifery in the School of Health, and Alison Nuttall, Honorary Postdoctoral Fellow in the School of History, Classics and Archaeology, and is to be published by Scottish History Press.

1 November 2010: A number of seminars are taking place this winter at the Centre for Research on Families & Relationships.

Prof. Arlie Hochschild's visit

6 October 2010: International scholar, Prof. Arlie Hochschild, author of the ground-breaking book 'The Managed Heart - The Commercialization of Human Feeling' visited the University of Edinburgh on October 6th 2010.

Research summer school

6-8 September 2010: Recognising that an increasing number of patients are surviving an episode of critical illness the critical care research group (SCCIRL), which is a collaboration of interdisciplinary ICU researchers at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Dundee, held a very successful ESRC funded international, interdisciplinary intensive care research summer school for early career researchers.

Nursing studies conference

10-11 March 2010: Nursing Narratives: voicing the future for nursing & nurse education. Nursing Studies at the University of Edinburgh held a conference on the future of Nurse Education in honour the late Professor Margaret Scott Wright first professor of nursing in the UK.
