Outline Biography
I graduated in Nursing from Leeds and later with a Master's degree in Nursing Research from Manchester and PhD from Edinburgh.
I have a broad range of clinical experience having worked as a Charge Nurse in Care of the Elderly, General Medicine and Haematology, and High Dependency Surgery before joining the University of Edinburgh as a lecturer in nursing.
I am the Postgraduate Director for Nursing and lead on the PhD/MPhil, MSc by Research in Nursing, Masters of Nursing in Clinical Research and postgraduate CPD. I organise and teach on the core research methods courses for all the Masters programmes. I also contribute to teaching in the Bachelor of Nursing with Honours.
I have an Honorary Consultant Nurse appointment with NHS Lothian where I contribute to the development of research in Critical Care. My current base is in the Surgical High Dependency Unit at the Western General Hospital.
Research Interests
My research interests are focused on research and knowledge utilisation and transfer and its organisational determinants. I also have research interests in nursing education, workforce issues and surgical nursing including intensive care and high dependency nursing.
I completed my PhD studies looking at research utilisation by nurses in general medical and surgical wards. I have completed several research projects funded by the Scottish Executive and the Health and Safety Executive in these areas. I am particularly interested in organisational culture and how that interacts with what nurses do at work.
I have recently completed several studies in nursing education, postoperative pain and in workforce planning. I am currently involved in a study looking at wireless respiratory monitoring in acutely ill patients. I am also involved in a study with clinical colleagues looking at job rotation in critical care and of postoperative delirium.
