Outline Biography

Tonks is a graduate of the City University London and St Bartholomew's Hospital programme, after which she worked in clinical practice primarily in surgical nursing, followed by a research assistantship in Edinburgh University's Department of Psychology. She then returned to nursing practice, joining the Nursing Studies department in the 1980s.

Tonks teaches on all four years of the undergraduate programme and on the MSc/Dip/Cert programme, and is  closely involved in the students' clinical placement learning and practice.

She is co-editor with Alexander MF and Runciman PJ of three editions of the textbook Nursing Practice: Hospital and Home - The Adult published by Elsevier and, and is co-author with Sinclair H of Altschul's Psychology for Nurses published by Bailliere Tindall.

She is also co-author with Watson R of Pathophysiology, Homeostasis and Nursing published by Routledge and co-editor with McQueen A of Perspectives on Cancer Care published by Wiley Blackwell.

Research Interests

Previous involvement in research looking at clinical supervision for nurses practising in remote areas, evaluation of the MSc nursing programme within Nursing Studies and a cross cultural study of service provision for children with chronic conditions.

Current interests relate to cancer care and survivorship, pain management, the acquisition and extension of clinical skills, clinical decision making and stress in nursing.
