Entrance requirements
- A personal statement outlining your reasons for wanting to study counselling (please attach this to your application).
- A previous degree (2:1 honours degree or equivalent, or a 2:2 together with a strong personal statement). We are willing to accept candidates who have professional qualifications equivalent to an honours degree (e.g. nursing, teaching or social work qualifications) and will also consider candidates who do not have a previous degree if they can demonstrate ability to study at postgraduate level through completion of a written task
- 2 references confirming aptitude to study at postgraduate level and appropriateness for counselling training.
- English language requirements (IELTS 6.5+ or equivalent) apply to students whose first language is not English or whose first degree was not taught in English
- Entry into year 2 requires successful completion of year 1 (the Postgraduate Certificate in Counselling Studies) at a 50% pass mark, and completion of a personal suitability and readiness interview
- Entry into year 2 also requires PVG clearance (The Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme which is run by Disclosure Scotland). This ensures applicants do not have any criminal convictions which would make them unsuitable for work with vulnerable adults or children. The University will carry this out on your behalf prior to entry to Year 2.
Can I apply to enter at Diploma level without having to undertake the Pg Certificate?
If your previous qualification covered much of the same content as our Certificate in Counselling Studies (basic counselling skills and an introduction to psychodynamic and person-centred theory), was validated by an educational institution, and carried 60 academic credits at postgraduate level then you can apply for Entry with Recognised Prior Learning. This should be included with your Pg Diploma 2013-15 application (you can download the RPL application pack - see right).
